Clearly gun violence in this country is a topic of major concern, and often, Chicago is one of the main targets of that concern. Unfortunately, that concern is warranted. In 2016, 4,331 people were shot in Chicago. That’s about an average of one shooting victim every other hour.  Of that shocking number, 762 individuals were shot to death, including 339 young adults in their 20’s. The number of murders so far in 2017 is only slightly behind the 2016 numbers. That relentless violence, which has ended hundreds of lives, has also damaged thousands more. It’s changing the life of this city.

Our morning will begin with a special welcome by Steve Edwards, Chief Content Officer at Chicago Public Media. We will then enter into an extraordinary conversation with WBEZ’s Cate Cahan, Senior Editor, and Tricia Bobeda, Digital Editor of Every Other Hour, as they discuss WBEZ’s yearlong project, “Every Other Hour.”

This important project is taking a unique approach in an attempt to better understand who picks up a gun and why.  The Every Other Hour team is designing this series to break through entrenched assumptions to build a better understanding of the complex web of causes of gun violence and its effects by combining stories of the people most affected by the problem – from young shooters and victims, to law enforcement, to moms taking to the streets to find solutions – with information and perspectives from experts.
