Patrick Deady, who is also Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance Board Vice-Chair, will begin with an overview of the Garfield Park Conservatory, opened in 1908. The entire Conservatory campus—12 acres in total— features a Children’s Garden exhibit that introduces plant life principles to a pre-school audience and is the center of the Conservatory’s commitment to science education for youngsters. The campus also includes three outdoor gardens including a demonstration garden that models sustainable gardening practices for backyard gardeners and urban agriculturists, and 11 propagation houses.
However, besides “walking” us through this historic treasure that features 5,000 varieties of plants, many of which are rare and exotic species from around the globe, Mr. Deady will explain how the site’s 4.5 acres of naturalistic landscapes under glass became host to “Beer Under Glass” in partnership with the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild. The annual event benefits both the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild, a non-profit organization, and the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance with proceeds supporting public programming at the Conservatory. With more than 45 participating breweries and tasting menus from top Chicago restaurants, “Beer Under Glass” is a terrific partnership between Chicago’s talented brewers and the Garfield Park Conservatory’s gardeners, arborists and plant curators. Event attendees have access to all gardens, showrooms and exhibits (excluding those under construction.)
“Beer Under Glass” on May 15, 2014, will bring together 2,000 people at the loveliest outdoor space in the city! This popular “must-attend” event is the official kick-off for the Illinois Craft Brewers Week, an exciting week of activities celebrating our dynamic and innovative community of local craft brewers.
